3 Ways to Make Music Practice More Fun
Practicing music does not always have to feel like hard work. Yes, progress comes from pushing yourself, but joy is just as important in keeping the momentum going. Here are a few ways to make your practice time feel more inspiring, playful, and personal.
Tips to Make Practice Fun
Not every practice session has to be about tackling something new or difficult. In lessons, I like to challenge students to stretch a little further each week, but at home it is perfectly fine (and encouraged) to revisit songs you already know. Playing something “too easy” is not a waste of time. In fact, it can remind you why you started in the first place. Music should feel joyful, not just like a workout. So give yourself permission to sit down and play or sing a song that makes you smile.
2. Make Warm-Ups Your Own
Warm-ups are important, but they do not have to feel stale. If you are tired of the same old scales or exercises, shake them up. For example, if your song has fast lyrics, create a tongue twister and sing it to a warm-up pattern you already know. That way, you are still warming up your voice but in a way that connects directly to what you will be singing. Think of warm-ups as a creative playground. You can tailor them to your needs and keep them fresh.
3. Play or Sing Along with Your Favorite Songs
Sometimes the hardest part of practicing is just getting started. One of the easiest ways to dive in is by playing or singing along with music you already love. Put on your favorite track, play chords with it, or sing out loud in the car. Yes, that still counts. You are engaging your voice and keeping your rhythm sharp without it feeling like “practice.”
If you are a singer, try singing along with the original recording. Matching the lead vocalist’s tone, phrasing, and pitch can teach you more than you might expect. It is like having a free masterclass right in your headphones.
Happy practicing!
